At a press conference earlier this morning, Universal Studios confirmed that the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will officially open in the Spring 2010. No specific date was given.

Names of the three main park rides are Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Flight of the Hippogriff and Dragon Challenge. Flight of the Hippogriff will include interaction with Hagrid as you fly on a Hippogriff for training. Dragon Challenge will center on flying either a Hungarian Horntail or Chinese Fireball. Univeral's existing ride, Dueling Dragons, will be re-themed into Dragon Challenge.

Other attractions include Ollivander's Shop, Owl Post, Dervish and Banges, Three Broomsticks, Honeydukes, Zonko's and Filch Emporium.

Maggie Smith discusses battle with cancer
Maggie Smith discusses battle with cancer The Times Online recently interviewed Dame Maggie Smith, where she discussed her career, her role in the Potter films as Professor McGonagall, as well as her battle with breast cancer. Smith, who was diagnosed last year, tells the story of how she filmed her scenes for Half-Blood Prince mid-treatment.

The actress is very candid in the interview, saying that she even accepted the possibility of dying. Thankfully, the doctors have given her an "all-clear," as she goes for a check-up later this month.

Smith is set to begin filming Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows shortly, but notes, "she is racked with doubt about her acting future after being 'knocked sideways' by her illness."

All of us here at MuggleNet wish Maggie a full and speedy recovery!
Fans credited with Cherrybomb release
Fans credited with Cherrybomb release Fans joined forces to start a petition for the release of Cherrybomb--a film starring Rupert Grint--and succeeded. As the BBC reports, the film has found a distributor and will be released sometime in 2010.

Rupert Grint was thrilled.

I'm delighted by the huge support the film has already received on the official Facebook page and other sites on the web and am so grateful to my fans in particular, who have travelled the world to support the film at festivals and preview screenings."
Harry Melling on life after Dudley Dursley
Harry Melling on life after Dudley Dursley Harry Melling--the actor who plays Dudley Dursley--discussed his recent weight loss and his career in an interview with the Telegraph.

On returning to the set of Deathly Hallows after his weight loss, Melling no longer looked like Dudley.

Dudley doesn't feature in the sixth Potter film, so there was a long gap between playing the butterball bully in the fifth, aged 16, and shooting the seventh film, this year. In the meantime, he had changed almost beyond recognition, to the producers' alarm. "They did this double-take, 'Oh my God, we are going to have to do something,' and I felt very guilty. They could have recast, but instead they padded me out."

Despite not being a lead in the movies, Melling is happy with his career.

"I can now shed the child-actor thing, like the fat, and start a new career, because no one sees me as Dudley."

Variety predicts $7 billion gross for Potter franchise

Variety predicts $7 billion gross for Potter franchise After Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is released, Variety predicts that the studio will have grossed $7 billion from the Potter franchise alone. This bold prediction comes from a new article where they look at what 'tentpole' films Warner Brothers has lined up over the next few years:

Tentpoles, the thinking goes, can justify megabudgets for top talent, lavish action sequences and special effects since they'll rake in dough for other divisions (TV, homevid, merchandise and vidgames). And in the case of new properties like "The Green Lantern" and "Sherlock Holmes," it can also establish an evergreen franchise.

LA Times looks at designing Horace Slughorn
June 26, 2009, 6:47 pm

LA Times looks at designing Horace Slughorn Continuing their Potter countdown, this morning The Los Angeles Times has posted a look at how costume designers designed Horace Slughorn’s wardrobe for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:

“Jim is not a small, fat man. He is tall and strong,” [costume designer Jany Temime] said. “So we had to change and adapt.” To do that, Temime used all of J.K. Rowling’s atmospheric detail to tell the story of Slughorn through his clothes rather than his size.

She explains: “Everything we did for his costumes was very rich, but also very used, because he’s not a rich man anymore. He hasn’t worked for a long time. He is a bit of a has-been. But his clothes, even if they were from 20 years ago, were once upon a time, very rich and very glamorous. So we went for ‘Old Glamour’ when designing.

The piece is a very interesting read. Check out the whole article right here!

Draco Malfoy on ‘31 Hateful TV/Movie Children’ list

Draco Malfoy on '31 Hateful TV/Movie Children' list Draco Malfoy, played by actor Tom Felton, has made the list of EW.com’s “31 Hateful TV/Movie Children.” The “Enfants Terrible” list is described as “a ghastly collection of maleficent on-screen minors” that includes such characters as Cartman, Cordelia from Buffy, and Biff from Back to the Future.

Well, yeah, this Slytherin scion has done everything in his power to put the whammy on Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and his mini-Scooby crew since page 1. Plus, he’s blond…and, in movies, blond kids are almost always bad news.

Congratulations Draco Malfoy

HP NEWS UPDATE-JUNE

LA Times talks to Arthur Weasley
LA Times talks to Arthur Weasley Continuing with its countdown to Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the LA Times has a new interview with Arthur Weasley actor, Mark Williams. The interview focuses, mostly, on the character of Mr. Weasley throughout the series and Williams also jokes about taking some props home:

If you could, once all of the films are done, take something from the set, what would it be?
In the Weasley household, there is a clock that shows where everybody is. It’s the most beautiful piece of prop-making. Lots of that is unappreciated and you just go on the set and you’re like ‘Oh my God!’ You just want to give it a close-up … The hands are the ends of scissors, and it says things like ’school,’ ‘work’ … and one of the sections says ‘in mortal peril.’ I’d love that. And it doesn’t work, by the way, cause I’ve been in mortal peril and it didn’t say anything. I’ve come back and it just said ‘at work.’

Enjoy the rest of the interview here.

Jessie Cave talks Half-Blood Prince with the LA Times
Jessie Cave talks Half-Blood Prince with the LA Times As part of their ongoing Half-Blood Prince sneak peek series, the Los Angeles Times has a new interview with Jessie Cave. She’ll be playing Lavender Brown in Half-Blood Prince.

In the interview, Jessie touches on all aspects of the film including how she initially got the role:

Q: For your final audition, what scene did you get to act out with Rupert?
A: We actually had to improvise for a good 15 or 20 minutes, which is very scary. It’s a really long time. The director, David Yates, was there and he was just like, “Hi. Right. Here’s a plate of biscuits, Jessie. It’s a lovely plate of chocolate biscuits and I want you to do whatever you want with these biscuits.’ Rupert was in the room, sitting on the sofa, and I just thought, ‘What the hell am I going to do with this plate of biscuits?’

Q: What did you end up doing?
A: I thought, ‘I’m just going to go for it.’ And I think Rupert was a bit scared, really. The biscuits were past the sofa, away from me so I kind of just tangled myself around Rupert and just made it really obvious that I didn’t really care about the biscuits. I just wanted to be near him. I think he was quite scared.

Emma Watson is Teen Vogue’s August cover star
Emma Watson is Teen Vogue's August cover star Teen Vogue has let us know about their stunning new photoshoot with Emma Watson. She will be featured on Teen Vogue’s August issue cover! With the photoshoot also comes a new interview where Emma discusses her future after the Potter series:

It’s not uncommon for working actresses Emma’s age to apply to college, but she is quite unique in her determination to give it a serious go. Perhaps that’s because she’s still not 100 percent sure she even wants to be a movie star when she grows up. “There’s not, like, a burning passion in me,” she admits, “that I have to act and I don’t care what I do. Until something comes along that I feel as strongly about as I did Hermione—like, I felt that it was life or death—I don’t want to act again.”

Teen Vogue also posted some other features related to Emma’s photoshoot: a behind the scenes gallery, a video, a fashion timeline, and how to get Emma’s style.

Will recent slump in DVD sales affect Half-Blood Prince?
Will recent slump in DVD sales affect Half-Blood Prince? The Los Angeles Times has an interesting piece on how a recent slump in DVD sales may effect Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’s performance. Or will it?

[WB President Alan] Horn said he doesn’t expect the soft DVD market to hamper sales of “Half-Blood Prince” because it’s a “unique property.” He believes that although budget-conscious consumers have become more selective about the DVDs they purchase, they have been demonstrating a desire to own big films like “Potter,” “Transformers,” “Twilight” and Warner Bros.’ “The Dark Knight,” which according to The-Numbers.com was 2008’s top DVD with more than 12.7 million units sold domestically.

Although Horn took a lot of flak from “Potter” fans when the studio pushed back the release of “Half-Blood Prince” to July from last November, the move may help boost DVD sales because the film will be released during the heavy gift-buying holiday season.

That last sentence confirms that the Half-Blood Prince DVD will indeed see a release before the holiday season! Thanks to Foss for the tip.

David Yates talks Deathly Hallows from the set

David Yates talks Deathly Hallows from the set Continuing with their series of Potter reports leading up to the release of Half-Blood Prince, the Los Angeles Times now has a piece with Director David Yates:

It was about 3:20 a.m. yesterday when my phone rang: It was David Yates, the soft-spoken British director whose second “Harry Potter” film, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” arrives in theaters across America on July 15. He sounded apologetic: “It’s quite early there isn’t it? Thanks for doing this, mate.”

Despite the hour, it was my pleasure to take the call — Yates is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and, after visiting him outside London last year on the set of “Half-Blood Prince,” it was a treat to catch up, even if his schedule required the pre-dawn appointment. Right now, Yates is in the midst of filming the final boy-wizard adventure, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” which will be split into two films.

“We’re here in the forest, we’ve just finished the scene where Harry, Hermione and Ron are captured by the Snatchers after being chased through the woods. The Snatchers are brutal and scary but they aren’t the most intelligent of creatures. They’re trying to figure out exactly who it is they’ve caught.”

Rumor Alert: Half-Blood Prince DVD Due in December, to Contain Deathly Hallows Preview?

Iconhbpposter2

Rumor Alert! Tonight we have received word that retailers are beginning to hear about the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince DVD. Apparently the DVD is set to be released during the holiday season in December, 2009 “on 1-Disc, 2-Disc, and 3-Disc DVD/Blu-Ray combo versions.” Even more interesting is the reports say this DVD may possibly, and we stress possibly, contain several sneaks previews or some sort of trailer for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Please Note: Readers will recall of course that with the release of the Order of the Phoenix DVD we did receive two special sneaks at HBP. It is also worth pointing out that you can already sign up to be notified of the availability of the Blu-Ray Disc for Half-Blood Prince here via Amazon. HOWEVER, as exciting as all of this sounds, this is very much unconfirmed and we urge you to keep this in the rumor category for now.

The Brisbane Times is reporting that the Australian premiere for Half-Blood Prince will take place on Sunday, July 12, 2009. The event will be hosted by Warner Bros Movie World on the Gold Coast.

Celebrities and VIPs are expected to attend the premiere, though it is not made clear whether or not there will be any Harry Potter talent. We will have much more on this, including the specific venue and guest list, when it is made available.
